Tom Coughlin says the NFL lacks common sense with Sash suspension

On Wednesday, New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin expressed his displeasure with the NFL suspending safety Tyler Sash for using prescription Adderall, even though it’s on the NFL’s list of banned performance enhancing drug’s.

“This kid really had no intention of doing anything that was illegal. I know what the definition of the rule is, and I understand all about that; I’ve been there myself . . . but you have to ask yourself, sometimes common sense needs to be involved,” Coughlin said.

“I feel bad for the kid,” Coughlin said. “He is a heart-and-soul football player; he takes everything that he has and puts it into the game. He loves to play. We used him in a very, very important role last year as a rookie, fullback on the punt team. So there’s no issue with this young man. He doesn’t need any watchdog over him. Ignorance is no excuse of the law, I understand; but he knows what is expected and he does it.”

I can’t argue with Coughlin’s point of view, even though I believe Sash should have had his doctor contact the NFL or consult when them before taking Adderall.

A few months back, Giants running back Andre Brown was also suspended for the first four games of the regular season for taking Adderall.  He appealed his suspension and proved to the NFL that he had a prescription.  They ended up dropping his suspension.

Giants using technology to monitor player work outs

The New York Giants have decided to use technology to their advantage, by using GPS devices and hydration/nutrition monitoring systems in order to track how much energy each player on their roster is exerting and how long it takes them to recover.

For example the equipment showed that running back Da’Rel Scott ran the most of any of the Giants running backs even though they all ran the same drills.

“I’m looking into the future,” Ronnie Barnes, the team’s vice president for medical services, told The New York Times. “We’ve known we need to do this, and I feel like we’ve begun to pioneer a little bit with our players and within the league.”

Barnes says that it help him give Giants head coach Tom Coughlin a much more accurate measure of how tired his players are.

“Currently, Coach Coughlin comes to me and says, ‘Do you think the team looks tired?’ ” Barnes said. “Or the players come to me and say, ‘Our legs are dead.’ And I’ll go up and say, ‘Coach, the guys are telling me they’re really tired.’ ”

“And usually he says to me, ‘Well, we haven’t done that much!’ But then he’ll make adaptations based on what I’ve told him,” said Barnes.  ”With this setup, I’ll be able to tell him, yes, they are tired — and also that, say, Ahmad Bradshaw is particularly tired and here’s why.”

Giants visit the White House and President Obama

The New York Giants visited the White House and President Barack Obama on Friday and the President stressed how Big Blue never quit as they went through the ups and downs of the 2011 season.

“The Giants took a whole bunch of hits this season, but they never went down,” Obama said. “From Day 1, they followed a simple model: Finish. Finish the play, finish the game, finish the season. And after Week 15, sitting at 7-7, they knew that every game was a playoff game. But the players, the coaches, the staff, the owners, they didn’t quit.”

Giants head coach Tom Coughlin talked about how his team inspired one another during their playoff run and eventual Super Bowl title.

“How this team might have inspired them to hope, to believe in themselves, to never give up, to strive to accomplish their goals no matter how difficult their situation might be,” Coughlin said, regarding the Giants playo

Giants give Tom Coughlin a contract extension

The New York Giants have announced that head coach Tom Coughlin’s contract has been extended through the 2014 season.

This coming season was the final year of Coughlin’s current deal, so the Giants essentially gave him a two-year extension.

Coughlin expressed his gratitude for being able to continue to be the Giants head coach.

“It has always been my belief that it is an honor and a privilege to be the head coach of the New York Giants,” said Coughlin. “I’m thankful to John Mara and Steve Tisch and their families for their support and the recognition of what our players and coaches have accomplished. And I’m grateful for the working relationship Jerry Reese and I have. We’ve got a lot of work left to do.”

“I wanted Tom as our head coach going all the way back to the early ‘90s,” said Mara, “so it was with great confidence that Ernie Accorsi and I recommended to my father and Bob Tisch in 2004 that we hire Tom. Of course, my father didn’t need to be convinced. He saw what we have all seen, a man who has a singular focus and incredible dedication when it comes to his work. In so many ways, Tom represents to me who and what the head coach of our franchise should be.”

“Tom is a winner and he’s a fighter,” said General Manager Jerry Reese. “And I enjoy and appreciate working with him. From where I sit, I couldn’t ask for more in a head coach.”

Update: Coughlin’s contract is worth $20 million over three years.

Hakeem Nicks believes he’ll be ready for training camp

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks told head coach Tom Coughlin that he believes he’ll be back in time for training camp.

” ‘I’ll be back for training camp’ were his final words,” said Coughlin.

When Nicks injured himself last week, the Giants said that he’ll be out for the next 12 weeks, which means he’ll be out until mid-August.  So there’s a chance he could be back for training camp, even though some people believe he might miss the Giants season-opener against the Cowboys.

Giants to bring back Plaxico Burress?

Even though New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks may be out for the next three months with a fractured foot, head coach Tom Coughlin squashed any potential rumors of the Giants possibly bringing back Plaxico Burress.

According to Ebenezer Samuel of the New York Daily News, when Coughlin was asked if there’s any chance they might bring Burress back, he should his head and mouthed ”no.”

Last season Giants fans wanted Burress back and look what happened, they won the Super Bowl without him.  There’s no need to bring him back, he’s clearly past his prime and Burress never got along with Coughlin in the first place.

Tom Coughlin is the NFL’s top rated coach

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin is the number one rated NFL head coach, according to SportingNews.com, who rated all 32 head coaches in the league.

Sporting News said that the most impressive thing about Coughlin is his ability to get his teams to play well when it counts, and I can’t argue with that point.

In 2007 and 2011, the Giants had an up and down season, but as the regular season ended they turned it on and rolled through the playoffs upsetting every team in their path.

Tom Coughlin not thinking of retirement

At the age of 66, New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin is patiently awaiting a contract extension that could get done any day now.

Coughlin told the Florida Times-Union that he doesn’t even think about retirement.

“I feel I have good energy. I’m excited every day. The competitiveness, the nature of the business, is something that I’m still excited about,” said Coughlin. “I don’t wander down that path. I don’t think about retirement. I enjoy the situation I’m in. I appreciate the backing I’ve received from [Giants] ownership and the way the players have responded to our program.”

Coughlin says he looks at thing son a yearly basis.

“I really don’t feel any pull or tug in another direction. I look at it on a yearly basis. In our business, no matter how many years they give you on the contract, it’s a one-year deal anyway,” Coughlin said.

John Mara: Tom Coughlin will have a new deal soon

After winning his second Super Bowl in four years, New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin has been waiting patiently for a brand new contract from owner’s John Mara and Steve Tisch.

“We’re working on it,” Mara said. “It will be done sooner rather than later.”

Coughlin is going into the final year of his current deal and he’s at least bought himself another four years with the Giants.

“I don’t think so,” said Mara when he asked if there will be any possible hang ups.

Both Mara and Tisch were impressed with how Coughlin rallied the 2011 Giants to a Super Bowl title.

“When we were in the middle of the season and things weren’t looking very good, this team really pulled together,” Tisch said. “Coach Coughlin really knew what to say to those guys, when to say it and how to say it and that is why we are here tonight.”
