Next week or so will reportedly be crucial for the Giants and Victor Cruz

New York Giants owner John Mara made it clear earlier today that he feels like they’ll be able to hammer out an extension for wide receiver Victor Cruz.

According to ProFootballTalk.com, the next 7-10 days will be very critical for both the Giants and Cruz.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that talks are ongoing, and that the next 7-10 days are regarded as important to the objective of getting Cruz signed to a long-term deal with the Giants.

It’s unclear why the next week or so is regarded as important, since there are no deadlines or other milestones that compel an agreement by May 17.  Presumably, the Giants and Cruz would like to have the player on the field for the bulk of the Organized Team Activities that cap the offseason program.

If Cruz and the Giants can’t work out a deal, he’ll have to decide at some point whether he’ll sign his restricted free agent tender or not.  If he chooses to hold out, he won’t be fined since he’s not under contract.  But he’ll  have to report by week 10 of the regular season or else he won’t be able to become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Reese hints at Cruz getting a new deal this season

New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese hasn’t ruled out the possibility of extending wide receiver Victor Cruz’s contract this season.

“It could happen. All those options are open,” Reese said on Saturday per Jorge Castillo of The Star-Ledger. “I just think Victor is focused on being a good football player again. The contract situation will take care of itself.”

I believe there’s a good chance the Giants will extend Cruz’s contract this season.  I think they want to see how well he plays during the first few weeks of the season before they reward him with a lucrative long-term deal.

Victor Cruz is focused on playing football, not getting a new contract

As New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz heads into the last year of his current contract, he made it clear that he’s focused more on football right now then getting a new contract.

“It’s going to be whatever my agents are working on with the organization. Whatever timing they feel is right. I’m going to go out there and take care of what my job is and that’s to go out there and play football,” Cruz said.  ”Whenever the contract comes, it comes. I’m not going to be sitting back, waiting for it, thinking about it, because then I won’t be focused on football. When that time comes, we’ll cross that bridge.”

If Cruz has a season this like he did in 2011,  the Giants will be forced pay him top dollar and his can move out of his town house and into a bigger home.

Giants give Tom Coughlin a contract extension

The New York Giants have announced that head coach Tom Coughlin’s contract has been extended through the 2014 season.

This coming season was the final year of Coughlin’s current deal, so the Giants essentially gave him a two-year extension.

Coughlin expressed his gratitude for being able to continue to be the Giants head coach.

“It has always been my belief that it is an honor and a privilege to be the head coach of the New York Giants,” said Coughlin. “I’m thankful to John Mara and Steve Tisch and their families for their support and the recognition of what our players and coaches have accomplished. And I’m grateful for the working relationship Jerry Reese and I have. We’ve got a lot of work left to do.”

“I wanted Tom as our head coach going all the way back to the early ‘90s,” said Mara, “so it was with great confidence that Ernie Accorsi and I recommended to my father and Bob Tisch in 2004 that we hire Tom. Of course, my father didn’t need to be convinced. He saw what we have all seen, a man who has a singular focus and incredible dedication when it comes to his work. In so many ways, Tom represents to me who and what the head coach of our franchise should be.”

“Tom is a winner and he’s a fighter,” said General Manager Jerry Reese. “And I enjoy and appreciate working with him. From where I sit, I couldn’t ask for more in a head coach.”

Update: Coughlin’s contract is worth $20 million over three years.

Tuck, Kiwanuka support Umenyiora in his pursuit of a new contract

New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora as the support of both Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka, who both believe he deserves to get paid.

“It’s hard,” Tuck said on ROME, a new show on the CBS Sports Network, per Ralph Vaacchiano of the NY Daily News. “He’s signed a contract and I believe in abiding by that contract, but also I think he’s outplayed that contract in today’s market. And how some of these defensive ends are getting paid lots of money, I think he deserves to get paid.”

Kiwanuka says that Umenyiora has been stuck with a bad contract for years.

“He’s been under contract in a bad deal for years now,” Kiwanuka said following today’s OTA per the Newark Star-Ledger. “Anybody who looks at the situation would say, ‘Well, this should’ve been taken care of a long time ago.’ For whatever reason it hasn’t so I understand his frustration. I know that it wasn’t a slight at me. I know he was just trying to get his point across.”

“If he was signed to a deal that was twice that and performed half of what he is, he would’ve been cut by now,” the linebacker said. “That’s just the reality of this game, but the fact that he’s signed to a lower-salary deal and he’s playing at a high level – 10-plus sacks every year – the fact that has nothing been done with it, it’s an obvious issue. It’d be an issue for anybody out here so I understand his frustration.”

I agree with Kiwanuka that Umenyiora has been stuck with a bad deal, but at the end of the day he agreed to sign that bad deal and now unfortunately he has to live with it.
