New York Giants co-owner John Mara was a guest on NFL AM this morning and indicated that he’s confident they’ll be able to sign Victor Cruz to an extension.

“I’m pretty confident that we’ll end up reaching a deal with (Cruz),” Mara said, per the New York Daily News. “This is not that atypical a situation. Player contracts, particularly with star players like Victor, can tend to drag on from time to time. I think we’ll get it done.”

Mara says it’s important to the Giants to get a deal done.

“This is the right place for him to play,” Mara said. “He’s a star in this area. He’s an important part of our team, and I think we’ll eventually get a deal done.

“But it’s just a process that you have to go through. And we’re going through it right now. There’s communication, and it’s slow but steady, and I think at some point we’ll reach a deal.”

New York Giants co-owner John Mara told NFL AM that they couldn’t help but select former Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib in the fourth round of this year’s draft.

“We came into the third day of the draft, and he’s sitting on top of our board — by far and away the best player we had left,” Mara said, per ProFootballTalk.com. “I talked to Jerry and Tom Coughlin about it and we agreed that you have to respect your board. Your scouts and your personnel people put so much time putting that together. If you just continue to take the highest player on your board, in the long run you’re going to be better off as an organization.”

Mara realizes the Giants need to have a good back up behind Eli Manning.

“It’s been a while since we’ve drafted a quarterback,” Mara said. “We’ve been very, very fortunate that Eli has been healthy for so long, has not missed a snap in I don’t know how long, but you have to get ready to groom somebody just in case. The guy was a quality player in college. We think he has what it takes to be a quality player in the NFL. To me, it was an obvious choice for us. He was so high on our board that we expected him to be gone on the first or second day, and we were shocked that he was still there on the third day.”

I thought the Giants made a smart move. Taking Nassib in the fourth round was a great pick and you really don’t know when Manning could go down with a serious injury, even though so far they’ve been blessed with him being able to stay healthy.

New York Giants owner John Mara made it clear earlier today that he feels like they’ll be able to hammer out an extension for wide receiver Victor Cruz.

According to ProFootballTalk.com, the next 7-10 days will be very critical for both the Giants and Cruz.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that talks are ongoing, and that the next 7-10 days are regarded as important to the objective of getting Cruz signed to a long-term deal with the Giants.

It’s unclear why the next week or so is regarded as important, since there are no deadlines or other milestones that compel an agreement by May 17. Presumably, the Giants and Cruz would like to have the player on the field for the bulk of the Organized Team Activities that cap the offseason program.

If Cruz and the Giants can’t work out a deal, he’ll have to decide at some point whether he’ll sign his restricted free agent tender or not. If he chooses to hold out, he won’t be fined since he’s not under contract. But he’ll have to report by week 10 of the regular season or else he won’t be able to become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

“I never actually announced it but I am officially retired from the game of football. I want to thank everyone who supported me throughout my movement but it was honestly time for me to walk away from the game. Ambition should not be limited to a sport and in my case it is not. “Continue to chase your dreams with the awareness of obstacles….You may not always be able to dictate your path…..but your response to change is always mental!!”

Sintim likely retired for health reasons. He tore his ACL twice and hasn’t played since 2010. We wish him the best with his future.

The biggest reason Curry’s career has gone down hill is because of chronic knee issues.

The Giants have an open roster spot, since they just placed rookie defensive tackle Markus Kuhn on season ending injured reserve.

It’s interesting the Giants brought in Addai. I know teams bring in players all the time for work outs, but with Ahmad Bradshaw dealing with a foot injury and now reportedly undergoing additional testing on his neck, I’m wondering if he could end up on injured reserve or out for an extended period of time.

“David has to learn you can’t be just a runner, that’s not what we do, you have to be a complete running back, you have to be knowledgeable, you have to be smart, you can’t just accept your mistakes,’’ running backs coach Jerald Ingram said on Monday.

Ingram says it doesn’t matter that Wilson was a first round pick.

“Just because you’re a first-round draft pick doesn’t mean you’re ready to play or they all would be great,’’ Ingram said.

“It’s about winning games, it’s not a popularity contest. It’s time for you to grow up and be a man now and see what you can do with the whole ball of wax. Until he proves that it’s hard to stick him out there and feel comfortable.’’

During an appearance on CBS Sports Network’s NFL Monday QB show, former Giants quarterback and CBS analyst Phil Simms said that he doesn’t believe Eli Manning is an elite quarterback.

“No, he is not one of the elites,” Simms said in quotes distributed by CBS, via the New York Daily News. “Because when I hear the word elite, I’m thinking about guys that can make unbelievable plays on the field by themselves. There are very few quarterbacks in that category.

“So yes, Eli has been a tremendous team player. He has been MVP of the Super Bowl twice. I know that. But the way I look at it, the answer is no.”

I have to disagree with Simms, Eli has made some unbelievable plays in both Super Bowl’s that he’s won. Manning’s throw to Tyree and Manningham were both amazing plays.

New York Giants rookie defensive tackle Markus Kuhn suffered a torn ACL during this past Sunday’s loss to the Bengals.

“He plays a big role,” Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell said. “Markus Kuhn’s done a really nice job. Nobody really talks about him and that’s good, because he just comes in and does his job. That’s probably why you don’t talk about him, because he’s done his job.

“Markus played anywhere from 10-15 plays and those 10-15 plays he would take off Chris Canty, or Rocky Bernard, or Linval Joseph were key plays that he didn’t really make a lot of mistakes. He was very solid in what he was doing. Before he exited the game yesterday, Markus had a pass breakup. I think if you look, he might have two, three, four pass breakups that nobody mentions.”

The Giants have had a lot of injuries at the defensive tackle spot this season and losing Kuhn will only hurt them as they head into their stretch run toward the playoffs.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported on Monday Night Countdown that New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw was removed from yesterday’s game against the Bengals because of a neck injury.

“The injury had been undisclosed to this point. Per Mort, Bradshaw has “some issues with his neck” and during the Giants’ Week 11 bye will undergo “some exams and MRIs” to detect the extent. Mortensen did note that coach Tom Coughlin did “not sound overly alarmed” during his Monday press conference. It’s still a situation for fantasy owners to monitor over the next two weeks,” wrote Rotoworld.com.

This explains why Andre Brown was on the field a lot more than Bradshaw.

“It’s a battle,” Rolle said, via the New York Daily News. “It’s a constant battle each and every day. … With this knee injury, it’s going to take some time. I never thought it would be this crucial. It’s just a lintering process. Nothing too serious. But something that lingers around a little bit.”

There’s no doubt that Rolle is a tough player that will fight through injuries. He played last season with both of his rotator cuffs torn.

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Carlos Rogers is ready to make a big play on Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz this Sunday and do his famed salsa dance.

“I like the dance, actually,” Rogers said, per the Sacramento Bee. “I really can’t do it as good as him but. But if I make a play or get an interception on him in my mind, just do his dance.”

Cruz wrote about Rogers disrespecting him during their regular season meeting last year in his new book.

“Then with his teammates cheering him on, he did a sarcastic salsa dance over me,” Cruz wrote. “The Candlestick Park crowd went ballistic, but I wasn’t laughing. It was a sign of disrespect. Instead of getting up and retaliating, though, I sat and watched Rogers finish his cheap Victor Cruz imitation. I promised to never forget it. I wasn’t sure when the opportunity would present itself but I was confident I’d get payback for that dance.”

Cruz went off on Rogers during the NFC title game by hauling in eight receptions for 125 yards in the first half.

With Hakeem Nicks possibly out this week, the 49ers may have the luxury to roll coverage to Cruz’s side of the field, which would give Rogers some much-needed help.

Maybe before the game Cruz can show Rogers his Super Bowl ring, since the 49ers were so close last season.
